Coral Castle

Homestead, Florida - 1 Jan 1923

Edward Leedskalnin constructed a building in homage to a lost love in Florida City, Florida. The structure comprises 1100 tonnes of indigenous coral bedrock, mined and shaped by hand using only hand tools [1].

He moved the entire structure to Homestead, Florida over a period of three years beginning 1936. [2]

There is still much speculation surrounding how he managed to construct the building, considering he weighed less than 130lbs and was of poor health. He built it secretly, by many accounts, and subsequent attempts to recreate the construction with block and tackle were unsuccessful. [3]

There is footage apparently of Leedskalnin hoisting blocks using tackle, dated to 1944. [4]
